Pi Variety

The summers I spent at science camp were the best of my life. Those hot, halcyon days were populated by a shockingly eclectic range of people: the Amish farmers riding buggies on the interstate highways, the rabbis at the neighboring synagogue wearing huge fur streimls in July, the kid who played four square with a dirty tissue during breaks, the instructor who spent his days as an astronomy teacher and his nights as a mortician. After meeting that crew, my discovery later in life that Lady Gaga is an alumna of the program came as little surprise.

Like at most camps, CTY held a talent show every summer, and like at most camps, it featured your standard dance numbers and musical performance (don't worry, I was the girl in the audience swooning to a Dave Matthews Band cover). But unlike at most camps, the kids at CTY were prodigiously talented in uber-nerdy ways. The most memorable act at the 1999 Talent Show was Charlie "Pi Boy", who stood onstage in front of hundreds of his adolescent peers and recited 600 digits of pi. And since CTY applauds the diversity of its student body no matter how weird, Charlie finished his performance to thunderous ovation.

So today in my culinary closet: Happy Pi Day! To celebrate, I'm featuring the infinite diversity of pie beyond your standard flaky fruit. Charlie "Pi Boy": This slice is for you.

  3. Silly question on the whoopie pies recipe - how do you get them to be the right shape/size? The recipe just says to spoon the mixture onto a cookie sheet, but I imagine there's a little more to it than that?

  4. I've never made the recipe before so I don't know, but I'd imagine you would just spoon them onto the sheet like cookies, no?
