Breakfast of Crankions

Taped to the refrigerator at work is a sign that says "Clearly mark foods that you do not want thrown out." I'd taped three post-its to my peanut butter, all reading "DOES NOT EXPIRE." Which apparently indicated that, when the fridge was cleaned this weekend, I wanted it trashed. Sad trombone.

This morning was not peanut butter jelly time
I discovered peanut butter and oatmeal in the days when I traveled a lot for work and my team regularly worked straight through lunch. PB oatmeal was the only breakfast that kept me from biting off my boss's head before he let me grab an udon at 2 pm.

This stuff sticks to your ribs. Many days of experimenting have revealed old fashioned ("5-minute," not instant) oats and natural peanut butter to be the only combination that keeps me full until lunch. And heartiness aside, I love oatmeal because it's versatile. My standard condiment is a melted banana. (Yes, bananas do melt--just nuke oats with a bit of water and half a banana for 2 minutes. Add a tablespoon of peanut butter and a bit of salt.) But give this a shot with whatever toppings you like: chocolate chips, cashews, jam. Or explore the tons of savory options that folks, particularly Mark Bittman, have posted online.

One topping I can't recommend: This morning, to make up for my PB privation I picked the strawberries from my lunch chicken salad. Despite my love of creative flavors, lemon-chickeny strawberries do not go well with three cups of coffee. Coworkers, watch out: Today my appetite is as cranked up as my mood, and I can't guarantee I won't bite someone's head off.
